When faced with the question are you a slave. Living in a western society, the answer is no right? I mean surely we are free in this wealthy country. We can do what we want right?
So why does everyone seem to lead similar lives and have similar goals? As human beings do we really lack so much imagination? Or are we stuck in a system?
Think about it.
Lets start from the beginning. Your born. the first 4 years of your life as you develop skills like talking and using the toilet. Then once your out of nappies and able to communicate you start school. No choice in this matter. This is compulsory. Some would say we are really privileged with our education system and it is possibly is one of the most organised. But it is a form of control. We aren't taught all the possibilities and ideas in school. The government chooses our curriculum. Have you ever considered that they teach children there ideals, while there experiences are limited and there room to question is narrow? Not only that but the routine of school is nationwide too. 9am -3:30pm Monday to Friday then you have your half terms and end of terms at Easter and Christmas. Then 6 weeks off at summer. Were I don't know about you but totally adjusted to the freedom of being off and suffered with bad anxiety when it came to September.
You finish school at the age of 16 Then you have a couple of options. Sixth form College or an apprenticeship are you main choices since now the government have said we need to be in education to 18. This is probably our first taste of freedom. However small it might be. You get to choose what you want to do at college, or what sort of apprenticeship you'd like to do. But even then your still stuck going into another routine similar to school, or work.
Then if college is your route of choice its university or work.
If you choose university, you graduate then you work.
The average working week is around 40 hours. Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm. Your tired after work. Leaving only the weekends to look forward to. We spend most of our adult lives with people we don't care for, possibly don't even like. Doing something we have no passion for. Just to afford to live, and if were privileged enough we can afford to treat ourself to a holiday. But even then were restricted as work tells you exactly how many holidays you can have per year.
